Vacation

Over two years later since with less than two weeks left.
Only now is the child finally divested of all that he has been. His origins are become remote as is his destiny and not again in all the world's turning will there be terrains so wild and barbarous to try whether the stuff of creation may be shaped to man's will or whether his own heart is not another kind of clay. ―Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian
(Just started. Thanks, Javi.)

BLUE

I look like I'm dead because I hate sleep.

The future is coming.

Ohhh how I've chosen to enrich my life.

I now enjoy listening to Britney Spears (saw her in concert), wearing animal prints (bought a zebra print jumpsuit), and watching sappy/silly "chick flicks" (LOVE 27 Dresses).

Last year I started watching baseball, which if you knew me even just two years ago you would never believe. This year I am finally embracing my inner ditz.

Soon I'll be hearing voices (Justin Timberlake vs. Orson Welles vs. Vin Scully) and developing sociopathic tendencies.

I ate bread in place of bacon.

Here is a photo of us on Maeby's birthday (Valentine's Day). We took her on a long birthday walk and later to the groomers for a birthday bath.

I've been trying to sleep early and wake up early but today I did all the wrong things.

I stayed up late last night to watch Big Love,
ignored my alarm clock this morning,
read comics in bed all afternoon,
took a long nap until 4pm,
drank two cups of coffee,
had a small pot of lightly caffeinated tea at 11pm,
and carbo-loaded just after midnight.

It's going to be a longgggggg and fatty night.

Duuuuuude

Sweet image courtesy of www.christianbale.net.

I've completely lost touch with this here bloggue after I moved all my RSS feeds to Google Reader. I currently subscribe to 123 blogs on that thing. Ridiculous!!!!!

Predictably and disappointingly, my respective past and forever <3ers Jeff Kent and Christian Bale are apparently bad peoples!

I attribute Christian Bale's recent (real accent) trip-up to being 1) crazy and 2) like all Hollywood-status actors--crazy. He's just a crazy person-type actor who went berserk on set. It happened to be caught on tape but, really, no big deal. I still <3 you.

Jeff Kent, on the other hand, big mistake! Big mistake donating $15,000 to the Yes-on-Prop 8 campaign! I <3ed you despite yourself, even when I heard you speaking ill of Vin Scully this last season and especially as I watched you fight back retirement tears just two weeks ago. But no more!!!!!

huyen vs. household

one of the worst things about living at my parent's house is that i constantly think about cleaning and redecorating the entire thing. i'm so tempted. not that i have the means to redecorate ... but i could go through each room... organize, clean, make piles... it'd probably take me about two weeks to gut the place... then i could lobby the parents for upgrades... so so tempted...

i am committed to this idea. it's just a matter of when... probably late summer. i already have some ideas about documenting the whole project. it'll be fun minus the insects and spiders. the hardest part will be the downstairs kitchen and living room where my grandma hordes all types of things i've previously thrown away for reuse. is it a grandma thing or is it a my grandma thing?

No bigs deals

I like that we can look at photos of the Universe. We can look at them, download the ones we like, and then blog them. The Universe. No big deal.

This one is titled "Astronomers Find One of the Youngest and Brightest Galaxies in the Early Universe." Courtesy of nasaimages.org.

Resolution

This year my goal is to simplify and move forward.

1) Get into dental school

or

2) Get a real job (DO NOT WANT)

I'm giving myself 2-3 months to ace the DAT. Until March. Until Spring Training. Until Opening Day at the absolute latest. If I can't do that...

Again, not my photos. Sorry.

Dr. AmanDUHHHH

Without getting into the Hows and Whys, I saw Twilight last Friday.

Four days later, I still can't recover from how stupid it was.

Shiny skin.
Sparkly.
"Like diamonds."
Why?

You're a vampire and when you step into sunlight your skin glistens like it's been slathered in George Michael's diamond cream. Really. That's it? What is that about!?

this is what PMS tastes like

i feel a bitterness seeping through my brain. it is suspended in the unripe cranberry-like juice of loathing.

i miss baseball. football is coming along well, more so than basketball. i haven't watched much basketball yet but when i do i feel slow (physically) and confused. football is fun and pretty emotional to watch but at the same time makes me feel empty inside for having no team. show me some leg, boayes!

Patheticness

Every time I get around to updating this thing I feel incredibly overwhelmed by all the things I could write about and then I feel like writing nothing at all.

Humbv.

I just picked up the Eameses' biography from where I left off a couple of years ago (maybe longer). It makes my brain weep.

More on that later.

Maybe I should just not do this anymore. Try to blog, that is. I think of it as a kind of exercise for my brain but then I do things like I just did where I mention something I want to write about but don't actually write about it. They call that laziness, they do. I'm fucking lazy.

...Which is exactly why my brain weeps when I read about Charles Eames and other idols of mine that can all at their simplest be characterized as non-fucking-lazy and un-Stephanie-ish.

Science!

Abstract:

MHC-correlated odour preferences in humans and the use of oral contraceptives

S. Craig Roberts, L. Morris Gosling, Vaughan Carter & Marion Petrie

Previous studies in animals and humans show that genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) influence individual odours and that females often prefer odour of MHC-dissimilar males, perhaps to increase offspring heterozygosity or reduce inbreeding. Women using oral hormonal contraceptives have been reported to have the opposite preference, raising the possibility that oral contraceptives alter female preference towards MHC-similarity, with possible fertility costs. Here we test directly whether contraceptive pill use alters odour preferences using a longitudinal design in which women were tested before and after initiating pill use; a control group of non-users were tested with a comparable interval between test sessions. In contrast to some previous studies, there was no significant difference in ratings between odours of MHC-dissimilar and similar men amongst women during the follicular cycle phase. However, single women preferred odours of MHC-similar men while women in relationships preferred odours of MHC-dissimilar men, a result consistent with studies in other species suggesting that paired females may seek to improve offspring quality through extra-pair partnerships. Across tests, we found a significant preference shift towards MHC-similarity associated with pill use, which was not evident in the control group. If odour plays a role in human mate choice, our results suggest that contraceptive pill use could disrupt disassortative mate preferences.

I had the most epic dream the night before last. So vivid. I never dream like that. It had motifs, themes, drama, performance art--I could've made a short film of it. Too serious, though.

What's up is down

I'm on a break from work right now. It is for studying. I wish I was on a break from work and not studying. Well, I am. At this exact moment I am both on a break from work and not studying. Right now. But you know what I mean. No obligations. I wish I did nothing so that I could do everything.

No politics here!

I spent not one minute flipping through photos of Paul Newman in various movie roles before realizing that I've never seen a Paul Newman movie. What failure!

Where to start?

Speaking of America, MLB playoffs start tomorrow! And the Dodgers are in it!
to!

WIN!!!!
IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited! My first playoffs ever!

Meanwhile, I have thought up a short list for you.

People who are hot but also not hot:

-Sam Riley. I just finished watching Control (hot). And then I thought about posting a photo of him on here so I searched for one online (not hot). Dude looks like a different person at every angle.

-Cillian Murphy. Same problem as Sam Riley except worse--looks hot sometimes, not at all other times. 28 days later, hot. Batman Begins, not hot.

-Don Draper. I don't remember what his real name is but he is the lead in "Mad Men." Honestly, I wasn't into him at all throughout the first season. Actor or character, I'm not sure which wasn't doing it for me then. "I would not date him!" I said to myself. But I get it now. I get what all the fuss is about!

-Malcolm McDowell. Young (circa late '60s/early '70s) = hot! Old (circa "Heroes" and "Entourage") = not hot! Although I do love my Vater Orlaag.

-Keanu Reeves. Kind of hot when you think about him, but not at all hot when you actually look at him.

-Matt Damon. Really, though.

-James McAvoy. I hate him! But I can't not watch. I think it's his eyes. Stupid jerk!

Toe jam

I think I really hurt my foot! I'm limping!

And before last night I was starting to gain some feeling back in my big toe (Vegas), but now it is numb again.

I used to be obsessed with The Hives brothers

My right shoulder and foot are in pain as I type this.

Ben, Kelly, Zuhair and I went to LobsterFest on Saturday at noon. It was fun. It was delicious. And we ended up getting free tickets to the Eagles of Death Metal/The Hives tonight at the Grove in Anaheim. Dude was like,

-Are you guys Indie 103 listeners?
-Yeah! (Yeah?)
-Are you doing anything tomorrow night?
-Uh (skepticism from my end), no, why? What's going on?
-Do you guys like the Eagles of Death Metal? And The Hives?
-Yeah!

And then he just gave us tickets. Just like that. Because that's his job.

I was super excited! Zuhair loves EODM! I love The Hives! Or at least I did in high school!

So we went tonight! And I had so much fun!

So much that I made Zuhair go up front with me for part of The Hives' set!

And, immediately, some lame dude called Pelle and Zuhair both "faggots"!

So we left him!

And then Pelle took off his tie and threw it to where we were standing!

So me + Zuhair + 4-5 other big dudes grabbed it!

And Zuhair held on!

And I held on!

And I was like, "Fuck, this is shitty! My hands hurt!"

And Zuhair was like, "Fuck! My hands hurt, too!"

But since we were both holding on I thought, "Fuck it!"

And then to all the other dudes Zuhair and I said, "FUCK YOU GUYS, WE GOT IT!" But in a nice way. (Or not.)

But that didn't work so we all held on to that shit for an entire song! (It hurt.)

And by the end only one other dude was holding on.

Then some tiny little fucker next to us (who was not involved) started yelling at Zuhair about some bullshit. About how the other dude had grabbed the tie before Zu. And that Zu had knocked the other dude to the ground to get a hold of it.

(Asshole.)

Some other bullshit happened.

So the security guard came and settled it by cutting a piece of the tie for the other dude that held on (who was totally sweet and empathetic) and then gave the rest of it to Zuhair and I.

Glorious, unnecessary, and painful victory!!!!!

At this point I felt old and much like dying. But Zuhair and the bullshit dude continued to argue with each other until Zuhair decided to leave.

So we left.

If you know me, I am not one to Care or Do Things... But... That is the story of how I hurt myself to get the long end of Howlin' Pelle Almqvist's tie.

(It smells like sweat-drenched baby powder cologne.)
