I was obsessed with The Rite of Spring for about a week straight.

For you. Two versions, both incredible.

The Joffrey Ballet performance with original choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky. This was broadcasted on PBS back in its golden days, which might just mean the days when I used to watch PBS after school for hours with my grandma. My favorite part begins at 7:30.

Performance by an unnamed group in 1970 with choreography by Maurice Béjart. My favorites are part 2/4 mostly and the segment that begins at 2:14 in part 4/4.

My sister is having the life of a time touring Europe/America with three lovely Girls. I love their damn (dayyyyyyyyyum) catchy music and will be seeing them in NY next month, a week after my birthday.

Back in July, I was in Paris with my family for a couple of days. We visited Merci, the "concept store" whose summer trailblazin' through the blogosphere has since died down, although not by much.

My favorites (this is where I name off pretty much every corner of the store) were the long hallway of secondhand books, the ice cream counter, the furniture showroom, the mini-haberdashery, the children's wing, and--my FAVORITE favorite--the flower shop just outside the courtyard.

I've been trying to sleep early and wake up early but today I did all the wrong things.

Do this on a very windy day in the city. Find some fishing wire. Now go outside and collect trash that is blowing in the street. Collect anything that blows. Plastic bags. Newspaper. Etc... String the trash together making a loose circle by tying the ends. Now throw this up above your head releasing it as if it were a kite that has escaped. If it is really windy a circle of trash should fly around in the air. The idea here is not to advocate the existence of trash, but to reorder and represent what already exists. Do not add new trash. Also, think about color when you do this.

one of the worst things about living at my parent's house is that i constantly think about cleaning and redecorating the entire thing. i'm so tempted. not that i have the means to redecorate ... but i could go through each room... organize, clean, make piles... it'd probably take me about two weeks to gut the place... then i could lobby the parents for upgrades... so so tempted...

i am committed to this idea. it's just a matter of when... probably late summer. i already have some ideas about documenting the whole project. it'll be fun minus the insects and spiders. the hardest part will be the downstairs kitchen and living room where my grandma hordes all types of things i've previously thrown away for reuse. is it a grandma thing or is it a my grandma thing?

I went digging through an old pile of my clothes and rediscovered these dresses. They used to belong to my cousin's friend's aunt. They remind me of Joan and Betty from Mad Men.

Anyhow, the red Joan dress is a little big for me in the shoulders and waist. I'm not sure what I should do with it...

The peachy Betty dress is not a great color for me... and requires some extra buttons in the waist-crotch area. I don't know.

I'll probably just hang them both in my closet as is for now.

MHC-correlated odour preferences in humans and the use of oral contraceptives

Previous studies in animals and humans show that genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) influence individual odours and that females often prefer odour of MHC-dissimilar males, perhaps to increase offspring heterozygosity or reduce inbreeding. Women using oral hormonal contraceptives have been reported to have the opposite preference, raising the possibility that oral contraceptives alter female preference towards MHC-similarity, with possible fertility costs. Here we test directly whether contraceptive pill use alters odour preferences using a longitudinal design in which women were tested before and after initiating pill use; a control group of non-users were tested with a comparable interval between test sessions. In contrast to some previous studies, there was no significant difference in ratings between odours of MHC-dissimilar and similar men amongst women during the follicular cycle phase. However, single women preferred odours of MHC-similar men while women in relationships preferred odours of MHC-dissimilar men, a result consistent with studies in other species suggesting that paired females may seek to improve offspring quality through extra-pair partnerships. Across tests, we found a significant preference shift towards MHC-similarity associated with pill use, which was not evident in the control group. If odour plays a role in human mate choice, our results suggest that contraceptive pill use could disrupt disassortative mate preferences.

-Cillian Murphy. Same problem as Sam Riley except worse--looks hot sometimes, not at all other times. 28 days later, hot. Batman Begins, not hot.

-Don Draper. I don't remember what his real name is but he is the lead in "Mad Men." Honestly, I wasn't into him at all throughout the first season. Actor or character, I'm not sure which wasn't doing it for me then. "I would not date him!" I said to myself. But I get it now. I get what all the fuss is about!

-Malcolm McDowell. Young (circa late '60s/early '70s) = hot! Old (circa "Heroes" and "Entourage") = not hot! Although I do love my Vater Orlaag.

-Keanu Reeves. Kind of hot when you think about him, but not at all hot when you actually look at him.

-Matt Damon. Really, though.

-James McAvoy. I hate him! But I can't not watch. I think it's his eyes. Stupid jerk!

My right shoulder and foot are in pain as I type this.

Ben, Kelly, Zuhair and I went to LobsterFest on Saturday at noon. It was fun. It was delicious. And we ended up getting free tickets to the Eagles of Death Metal/The Hives tonight at the Grove in Anaheim. Dude was like,

-Are you guys Indie 103 listeners?
-Yeah! (Yeah?)
-Are you doing anything tomorrow night?
-Uh (skepticism from my end), no, why? What's going on?
-Do you guys like the Eagles of Death Metal? And The Hives?
-Yeah!

And then he just gave us tickets. Just like that. Because that's his job.

I was super excited! Zuhair loves EODM! I love The Hives! Or at least I did in high school!

So we went tonight! And I had so much fun!

So much that I made Zuhair go up front with me for part of The Hives' set!

And, immediately, some lame dude called Pelle and Zuhair both "faggots"!

So we left him!

And then Pelle took off his tie and threw it to where we were standing!

So me + Zuhair + 4-5 other big dudes grabbed it!

And Zuhair held on!

And I held on!

And I was like, "Fuck, this is shitty! My hands hurt!"

And Zuhair was like, "Fuck! My hands hurt, too!"

But since we were both holding on I thought, "Fuck it!"

And then to all the other dudes Zuhair and I said, "FUCK YOU GUYS, WE GOT IT!" But in a nice way. (Or not.)

But that didn't work so we all held on to that shit for an entire song! (It hurt.)

And by the end only one other dude was holding on.

Then some tiny little fucker next to us (who was not involved) started yelling at Zuhair about some bullshit. About how the other dude had grabbed the tie before Zu. And that Zu had knocked the other dude to the ground to get a hold of it.

(Asshole.)

Some other bullshit happened.

So the security guard came and settled it by cutting a piece of the tie for the other dude that held on (who was totally sweet and empathetic) and then gave the rest of it to Zuhair and I.

Glorious, unnecessary, and painful victory!!!!!

At this point I felt old and much like dying. But Zuhair and the bullshit dude continued to argue with each other until Zuhair decided to leave.

So we left.

If you know me, I am not one to Care or Do Things... But... That is the story of how I hurt myself to get the long end of Howlin' Pelle Almqvist's tie.

(It smells like sweat-drenched baby powder cologne.)

i've been eating a shit ton of awesome/expensive/fat-people food.

1. bacon at least 3 times/wk
2. beef jerky at least 4 times/wk
3. in-n-out once a week
4. sausages or hot dogs 5 times/wk
5. crawfish, dungeness crab, and oyster (sun.)
6. japanese BBQ meat meat meat meat (mon.)
7. pastrami sandwich and potato salad (tues.)

so if you run into me and i have more chins than usual you will know it is because i spent around $300 on all these food items in the last 2 weeks.

i can't sleep. my mom was in my room trying to "talk" to me and then i saw this huge daddy long legs in a web at the foot of my bed. like if i had laid down it would've been right next to my feet. and so i was in hysterics telling her to get it out of my room. instead she told me to leave it alone and that it was small.

is that some cruel joke that's supposed to make me want to crawl onto the spider-free couch and die? also, she was lying. so she was like, nevermind, it is big. then she took her hand and brilliantly tried to WAVE IT AWAY. SO NOW IT IS DEEPER IN THERE. SOMEWHERE. HIDING. I CAN'T SEE IT. "the wind blew it outside," she said. real funny, mom. enough to make me want to pitchfork my innards.

it could be anywhere between my bed, the prime-spider-real-estate aisle of boxes, and the bathroom. which means i can't go to the bathroom. or to bed. which means i can't sleep. i'm not sleeping. at least not until i locate this thing and figure out a way to get rid of it without forming any sort of contact, especially of the eye and tactile variety.

i've told her so many times, i've told everyone so many times, that i have a crippling fear of insects and spiders. no one takes me seriously.

on a slow day at the office i dread the three hours between 3pm and closing. bored. boring. missing afternoon games. thinking about buying a new pair of scrubs.

every day i do a lot of word-fumbling on the phone--answering calls, confirming appointments, talking to insurance companies and customer service. and then there's the sweaty armpits and dry mouth i get while dealing with peoples in persons.

just imagine me, a girl who is comfortable going days without uttering real-life words to a single person, trying to convince a penny-pinching asian mother to spend ten thousand dollars on braces for three of her kids. terrifying.

otherwise, it is a decent job. i only work four days a week, which is both bad and good because of how poor i am and how i never want to go to work.

in fact, i barely make enough money to drive to work and make money. raise! raise! raise!

i would throw it all away but most of it is my sister's. instead i will ask her (again) to come home and organize it, which she won't, and then i will have to organize it for her.

my lease ends tomorrow. i will feel weird about actually/finally leaving riverside for good.

as for living at home, an end to my parents' laissez faire attitude is nearing. i will begin to ask them for gas money. mom will begin to release the crazies. i will begin to spend as little time at home as possible. mom will begin to come into my room at 3am to "talk."

oh, wait. i already do. she already does. it's high school all over again! college apps and all!
